Friends & Neighbors...

Alterra Coffee Good roasters make good neighbors...did someone say that? They could have, because it means freshly roasted coffee is never more than a few minutes away. The city's premier source for fair-trade, organic, and other great coffees is just across the river on Humboldt Avenue.

East Side Association The East Side B.I.D. and East Side Association represent Milwaukee's most exciting retail, entertainment, and residential district. Located between Lake Michigan, the Milwaukee River, Downtown, and UWM, we are actively involved in the conscientious development of an enhanced business district designed for people looking for a dynamic place to live, work, shop, and relax.

Our Milwaukee Beans & Barley is proud to be a founding member of Our Milwaukee, a group of local, independent, homegrown Milwaukee businesses. This group— comitted to shameless self-promotion—is dedicated to maintaining a vibrant, thriving, local economy grounded in the strength of local independents.

Outpost Natural Foods Beans & Barley and The Outpost are siblings, having appeared on the Milwaukee health food and co-op scene (can you say "hippie"?) at about the same time. Both started out very modestly, and grew as customers demanded. Though having grown in different directions over the years, today we enjoy a very comradely relationship, and we encourage you all to stop by.

OCA (Organic Consumers Association) The OCA is a grassroots non-profit public interest organization which deals with crucial issues of food safety, industrial agriculture, genetic engineering, corporate accountability, and environmental sustainability. We are the only organization in the US focused exclusively on representing the views and interests of the nation's estimated ten million organic consumers.

Ode Magazine Lots of magazines we could link to here (& sure, they'd be those inflammatory, lefty rags), but this one's different. Very hard to pigeonhole, and very...optimistic. Ready for that?

The Pabst, Riverside, Turner Hall Theaters The Pabst and Riverside, and Turner Hall Theaters are local treasures, and integral to the vibrancy of performing arts in the city of Milwaukee.  They, along with a number of others, have partnered to increase awareness of the many original, locally owned and community focused businesses here. Accross the country, local independents face daunting competition from chain and "big box" stores.  At the same time local businesses like Beans & Barley, Outpost Natural Foods, Alterra Coffee, and the rest of the "Our Milwaukee" members are keeping the local economy and cutural scene healthy. Urban Ecology Center Living in the city doesn't mean being out of touch with our natural environment. In their roles as both students and teachers of Urban Ecology, these folks are a priceless resource for Milwaukeeans. Visit the Center, along the Milwaukee River, just south of Riverside High School at Oakland & Locust.

The Yoga Society of Milwaukee This center right here in the neighborhood has study and classroom facilites. Started a couple of years before Beans & Barley, focusing on the teachings of Sri Swami Rama.

LotFotL FARM Tim Huth and his crew at LotFotL (Living Off The Fat Of The Land) are going into their third year as a community-sustained (and sustaining) farm. Farming on 15 acres of certified-organic land leased from Michael Fields Agricultural Institute, they produced mountains of beautiful tomatoes, broccoli, asparagus, and more for our kitchen last season. Our partnership will expand this year, and all are encouraged to contact Tim and the increasing numbers of CSA farmers in southeast Wisconsin.
